The first meeting of the Youth Voice Conference was held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday 7 February.
Chaired by student Ashley Blakestone and paid for by a grant from VOX the meeting consisted of young people questioning a panel of councillors and council officers. The councillors were Tony Wallis, Darran Travis and Hazel Chowcatt. Officers included John McLeod (Education) and Ian Thomson (Planning).
Topics raised included the needs for an internet cafe, mobile skatepark and subsidised entry to Xscape facilities for local youths. Price and quality of schools meals and bus fares for young people were also discussed. Other requests were access to drama and music facilities.
This was the start of a process of young people getting over their concerns to people who can assist. The Group is constituted and plans to apply for funding for their projects.
