For local democracy week, young people throughout the Wakefield District were asked to build a “wall” of boxes, with one brick (box) from each town. I attended the Castleford session. Here is the list of thirty wishes that the town’s young people compiled with the three shortlisted marked with an asterisk. Free Astro Turf (possible site at Whitwood) Chill out room with a TV and PS2 at Centre XI Young peoples’ café, to provide sandwiches and jacket potatoes Faster computers in centre Dirt track for off road racing (possible site at Whitwood) More pool tables in centre (large pool cues and free games) Better equipment at youth club Refurbish / repaint youth centre Motorbike training for young people Car training for young people Transport to Centre XI (from places such as Airedale and Ferry Fryston) Develop open land behind Airedale business centre for sporting activities Multipurpose sport area (Triangle at Airedale) Social evenings in Airedale as Centre XI too far away Youth shelters* Free activities, such as golf and paintballing, for young people Flat screens computers at Centre XI New CD system and more CDs at Centre XI Day trips Free or subsidised travel on public transport* More bus stops and more bus services Warm sheltered areas Football pitch / golf, netball and rugby in Townville Educational trips Ice skating facility at Xscape Lighting to make parks safer* DJ booth Cinema room in centre Bigger shopping centre More sofas and comfortable chairs in the centre Arcade games in youth club Christmas party The brick that went into the wall was better lighting at parks. Now, I’ll see what can be done, funding permitted, to bring some of these to happen.
