Friday 11th June 2004:Just after the election is like the proverbial calm after the storm. In the run up to the election I wonder if we’re doing enough in the campaign. People assure me I’ll be okay but I still worry. The key is to keep busy but review that the activity is productive.

I know some say they only see us at election times but a lot are pleased to see me and my colleagues. There are has been a change in the boundaries so the residents of “new areas” are pleased to see us and that is encouraging.

Election day is frustrating. The count is the worst time. This is my second election and I assure my party colleagues who are new to this that they’ll do better than they think. However, I might look calm and talk reassuringly but I’m worried too. Like them I take too much notice of the papers that don’t have a cross against my name.

Eventually, our ward is called to the stage, The returning officer tells all candidates that it’s a clear victory for the Labour candidates. I’m pleased. Then the votes are announced. I’m the last in alphabetical order but I’m delighted to get just over 2,800 votes. With only one hundred votes less than the one with the highest votes I’ll be in for three years.

Monday 14th June 2004: Signed the declaration so that now I am officially a councillor again. The group will now decide who gets which duties. I work but I’m hoping to get a position where I can contribute more.
